BUCS Heads 2010 - too chilly for Lycra

Despite freezing weather and fierce snow storms, Glen, Bill, John and Nadia brave the icebergs on the River Nene to provide safety cover for the BUCS Rowing Head in Peterborough. After an aborted attempt in 2009 due to large chucks of ice in the river it was nice to get the go ahead for this year's event.

Arriving on the Friday night an early start was on the cards for Saturday and it was all to no effect with problems over launching frustrating them. After the third attempt and some off road driving they finally got afloat and the rowers had some good racing. John assisted one sinking rowing eight and thanks to the universal tool of all boats - gaffer tape, got the competitors back to the start. Glen and Bill enjoyed the speed limit free River Nene in several places and put in a new record for the day's race management team.

Saturday night is best left to the imagination!

Sunday morning was a sight. Snow had fallen overnight and coated everything in several inches. It was going to be chilly. Undeterred and without the launching problems of Saturday, our team put to the water despite the snow covered slipway. After smashing the ice up they headed to their allotted posts to keep the competitors safe. They turned up shortly afterwards with some of the more hardcore competitors in their lycra numbers and their bright red skin shining in the white covered landscape! The snow quickly turned to slush as each competitor passed and by 3 the last competitor was heading across the finish line. Despite the chilly weather we had a great time and we'd like to thank BUCS for inviting us to take part in the event. Hope to see you next year!
